Reply with quote | #1 | There is a horse i know, he is about 15 and he is a great horse, until you ride him in the schooling ring...he has this strange habit of turning around in the middle of a ride. If you don't know what i mean i will give an example. You are trotting up the side of the ring, and he stops and starts turning around to go the other way...is this just bad manners? I have tried finding out on the web but nothing comes up that is exact. Has anyone else come across this problem? __________________ If your horse says NO, you have either asked the wrong question or asked the question wrong |

Reply with quote | #2 | Hi Steph,
Are you schooling/riding in a round pen? What size is it?

Reply with quote | #4 | Oh okay so it's a rectangle and is abour 20m x 40m (usual arena size).
Sometimes horses get totally bored in arena's and need a change. Some horses are worried about what's at one end of an arena. Some horses get gate sour and always want to get to the gate or with their friends so take over a bit. Some horses get confused or unconfident and if you're not a good leader (not strong, just good) then they take over situations because they can and feel they have to.
What you need to do is figure out what and why he's doing this. Is he bored, is he worried/frightened, is he unconfident, is he not listening to you because he doesn't want to do what you ask.
Have you tried walking him in hand around the arena and with his exercises to see if it's okay when you're not riding him?

well its not me who rides him, but they lunged a while ago and he does it then but not as much as when you ride him, i think he may get bored in the ring like you said, because he is fine on a hack even when he isn't with any other horses __________________ If your horse says NO, you have either asked the wrong question or asked the question wrong |
