Our New Babies

Hello everyone!
first time I post something here but am soooo excited!
we have a gorgeous young gelding on loan with purchase in the long term(and by the loook of it he will stay with us)
Shadow is 23 months old and has been very well trained. the small draw back is he was trained with food rewards so he always expect you to have something in your hand to give him but we are getting round this somehow!
Then we thought of having a companion for him to enjoy and play with and as the intention was to have a young filly to breed from we went to the Beaulieu horse auction to see what was on and how it worked! yeah right! that was the intention and as we all know the road to hell is paved of all those good intentions we had!
I let my partner Dave deal with it as he had the money burning his pocket!;-)
at the end of the day we came home with one filly who is six months old and two colts(6 months too) so our Shadow surely has some play mates and he has been such an angel. acting like the big brother showing them what to do and how it goes.(thank the lord, which ever lord it is!;-) we have two stables and the yearlings are quite small in size! phewww!
within a week we have thought one colt and the filly to accept the head collar and lead and walk alongside our hip then be groomed without flicking.
Being new forest ponies they of course gorged on the grass of our paddock so they were a bit bloated for the first two day but some mint tea in the drinking water help relieve that alongside with fennel and corriander seeds in their food. they had their pasport names and one of then was Ashely(the one who is still quite skitish at the moment) so as Dave has three nephews and niece we nicknamed them after the children. So our Shadow now has Loulou(for laura) as a girlfriend, stevie and Ashley.
We wormed them on Thursday and god all mighty what came out of them was unbelivable(considering it was said in the auction ring they had already been wormed- if you believe that, you'll believe anything!
hope I'll be able to include a picture to show them all to you.
Pascal

Forum: Other Subjects

My new website

Well.....I haven't been around for a while and that would be because I have been a busy bunny.

It turns out that I have a new skill. Well not so much new, just undeveloped....which has shown itself strong and developed fast.

I have been learning how to work as an animal communicator.

So my time has been filled with practicing my new skill and building my website (still not quite finished, needs tweaking....sorting paypal out etc)

But can you guys take a look and let me know what you think? Constructive criticism is welcome!!

http://www.celtictotem.co.uk

Forum: Alternative Therapies

Toys For Youngsters

Hi, Can anyone suggest some ideas for toys to keep a 2 year old happy. He is in a field with an older horse and I think he is getting bored, with the dark nights I am not getting to play with him as much as I would like, so he keeps annoying the older horse, to the point I had to split the field to give her some peace. He likes to play with my German Shepherd and they both run around the field, so other than getting another youngster, I can't think of anything else to try.
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks

Forum: Other Subjects

A new equine therapy system

now available through the Veteran Horse Society

For the first time, an equine organisation is combining its experience and skills to assist horses and their owners through Animal Communication and Reconnective Healing.

Julianne Aston, founder of the Veteran Horse Society and Jean Clack, an experienced animal healer, have found that by working together they are able to assist horses that don't respond to conventional channels alone. Their holistic approach to healing and understanding a horse's wider needs has brought positive results with testimonials from the owners of horses that Julianne and Jean have already been able to help.

Animal Communication is all about tuning into the horse's subconscious to help resolve deep-seated issues that could be affecting its current behaviour. Listening to an animal's thoughts and feelings, fears, anxieties, anger, frustration or pain - possibly from a past experience, enables the therapist to understand the causes of unwanted behaviour - from the horse's perspective. Rather than trying to force a new behaviour on the horse, Julianne works with the animal to create a two-way dialogue of trust and communication. This is where Julianne excels with her patience and natural talent for listening to horses.

Reconnective Healing is a widely used and recognised human therapy that works with the body's energy frequencies. It is often a life-changing experience as they body's own ablity to heal itself both physically, emotionally and spiritually are heightened. Jean trained in America and France and has found that horses are particularly receptive to this form of healing which brings new levels of energy working with every system within the body and promotes a deep sense of peace and relaxation in the horses she treats. This positive energy remains with the horse and continues to work long after the therapy session.

The unique combination of Animal Communication Reconnective Healing creates a bridge for the purpose of healing and understanding and is now available to horse owners in the UK at the Veteran Horse Society's Rehabilitation Centre in Pembrokshire

For more information and to discuss your horse's needs with Julianne of Jean please call 01239 881 300

Disclaimer: Rehabilitative Healing makes no claims, promises or guarantees and neither diagnoses nor treats specific health challenges but focuses on psychological and behavioural problems.
Older horse/Arthritis

Hiya,

A friend of mine down the road has two ageing horses, both in their twenties I believe and one of them was very stiff, hard to get going, older sort of horse ailments.

She has tried many things to help this horse but recently came across something she is raving about. The company is EQUINE ANSWERS (http://www.equineanswers.co.uk) and she started her vetran on their 365 complete and their Premier Flex ha. Now the Premier Flex ha has HA (hyaluronic acid) in it, the same as Cortaflex but in a much bigger doseage.

She says even only after a couple of weeks her veteran is jumping jumps again and has a very easy going step now. She's very impressed with these two supplements and so I thought I'd pass the tip on to you.

Good luck anyone that tries these, please feel free to comment on your findings with your horses too.

Shelley

Forum: Ailments

not sure to put this, but just saying hello and boring you with my story!

Hi all,

I'm new here and I was really impressed by the content on the website so I thought I'd join the forum!

My welsh cob is a tricky little mare who has been lame for about a year now. I moved her at the beginning of the summer to a much friendlier (and cheaper!) livery yard where I could have her on 12 weeks box rest DIY and then have 24 hour, 12 months a year turn out.

At her previous yard (where I bought her from a friend about 2 and a half years ago) she was on working livery, which suited us well. She was being completely cared for and exercised and I could go up as I pleased. The disadvantage being I had lack of control, and the yard was a large equestrian college and very impersonal.

So when she went lame last november, and we couldn't find anything wrong with her, they very kindly put her on a 'retirement' livery which basically meant she was put in a field with the old buggars and given the winter off. Which she very much enjoyed!

We went through more vet stuff in the spring, saw three vets who finally found a tear in her left high suspensory ligament, and did shockwave therapy and a plasma irap and we're still waiting for the results. Recovery time - probably between 6 months to a year if it's going to work. They started charging us over 450 pounds a month for her time on box rest. So we rapidly moved her and I took over her care.

It's turned out to be the best thing we could have done. I did her completely DIY on box rest for 2 weeks, then did another 6 weeks where she went out on her own in a small paddock for a few hours each day. She was an angel, no trouble at all, and had a wonderful stable looking out over the yard and accross to the fields. She was turned out next to the mares field so met them over the fence, and I introduced her in hand over the fence to the geldings when I did some walking in hand. Most importantly it has developed a great bond between us, one which I didn't think we'd had.

After 6 weeks, we started her out with the 3 other mares (and one gelding too wimpish to go out with the nine geldings!). She settled in fine, for a few days they were at opposite ends of the field, but soon were getting along fine. Very little chasing, no kicks or bites, and a few times I found them all happily eating in a tight group. When the gelding went and one mare was sold, just three of them were left. One of the mares then had to be renegated to the 'pony field' where there was limited grazing because she had become roughly the size of a house! So just my girl and another mare were left and that's turned out to be a wonderful thing. It means they sort of bonded (although my girl is independent and doesn't generally attach to others).

The fat mare is now back in the field, so it's three of them, a comfort to know if one has to be bought it. The field is massive! All three are usually out 24/7. There's natural cover in the form of hedges and trees and I'm leaving her barefoot and fancy free! (i.e. No rugs). As a welsh section D she should cope nicely in the winter, and when her coat grows she looks like a real teddy bear!

That's probably enough ramble! The website has been an inspiration and helped me make the decision that if my girl is sound to ride in the spring, I will maintain her barefoot and keep it natural. I love hacking and that's what we're going to do!! I
might even try her bitless, although maybe not on the more busy road routes!

Thanks for getting this far on this ramble!

Billie

Forum: Other Subjects

To feed or not to feed?
My question here is would you recommend me feeding my mare? The field she's in 24/7 is so huge for just three of them, she is already slightly round from the summer grazing and after the wet weather the grass is still quite lush. There is natural variety (lots of different grass types) from the grass and the hedgerow (in fact the other day I saw her munching her way through the blackberrys!) and as she's lame she is doing absolutely no work!

When the grass gets worse and if she starts losing condition then perhaps, but for the moment would you agree it's pointless to feed her anything?

Also the field is so massive for just three of them with natural shelter from the worse of the weather, she shouldn't lose condition much over the next few months and there should be more than enough grass.

What do you think? I am being a bit mean on her by not giving her hard feed?

Billie

Forum: Grazing & Feeding
